It is hard—even demoralizing—for families to figure out how to pay for college. It can be crushing to navigate forms, applications, and documentation, all to be provided a financial aid package that does not cover enough of the bill. Yet, the belief that college is worth it is so strong that people try to figure out how to make it work. They seek out advice from family, friends, and school officials. Heck, they’ll even pay companies to help them navigate applying for federal student aid. These companies profit off the confusion and uncertainty surrounding student aid and have been on the rise, even though the general public knows little about them. This problem affects not just college students and their families, but anyone who is harmed by the degradation of governmental institutions.
